Keep Your Zero-Cost AI Side Project Running When Free Models Disappear

Use free LLMs as a test layer, isolate the model call, and set a paid trigger before a delisting breaks your weekend AI app.

You wake to an error from the model you used last weekend. Your little app still has a name, a route, and a few users, but the free endpoint it leaned on is gone. A free model can vanish before the code does.

Free models are a test layer

OpenRouter, the service your free API key points to, had 14 free-tier models in mid-August 2026, down from 20 earlier in the summer and 15 one week earlier. Between early August and mid-August 2026, OpenRouter removed multiple free model entries. Meta Llama 3.3 70B Instruct and several Qwen variants were among the most consequential removals. Poolside's Laguna M.1 was removed from OpenRouter's free list about one week before mid-August 2026.

OpenRouter's zero-cost open-weight models depend on provider subsidies from DeepSeek, Meta, Alibaba, Z.ai, and NousResearch for promotional or research purposes. When that subsidy changes, the model does not wait for your weekend. By September 2026, the June 2026 zero-cost lineup had disappeared from the free roster.

Free-tier rate limits move too. In May 2026, an OpenRouter free account faced roughly 20 requests per minute and 200 requests per day. By September 2026, the free tier allowed 20 requests per minute and 50 per day, or 1,000 per day after a one-time $10 credit purchase. A weekend project budget can survive that if it treats the free tier as a lab, not a warehouse.

A free LLM tier is useful for judging tone, format, and whether the model can follow your prompt. It is less useful as a promise. If your app depends on a fixed model name, you are renting behavior from a subsidy that may end before your next build.

Put the model behind a swap point

Keep the model call in one fixed place. If your app can change the model ID, endpoint, or provider without touching the UI, you have a swap point. A routing gateway or a small internal model registry can catch 429 responses from one free provider and route the request elsewhere. That is the difference between a broken prototype and one you can repair in an evening.

You do not need a company to do this. Most side projects stay side projects, and that is fine. A config file, an environment variable, or a tiny function can hold the model choice. Hypereal offers a drop-in alternative to OpenRouter for many open-weight models because its endpoint uses the same API shape. Your app should not know which model is free; it should only know which model to call.

For a zero-cost API setup, the swap point can be a setting in a config file. Put the model ID, base URL, and API key together. Keep another model ID nearby for a free model rotation. Store a paid key in the same place if you want a fallback. When the free route fails, the app can try the next route instead of erroring out.

Set the paid trigger before the outage

Make the paid trigger boring. Hit the daily limit, lose a required model, or need more than hobby-scale reliability, and you pay. By September 2026, DeepSeek R1, Qwen3 Coder 480B, Llama 3.3 70B, and Llama 4 Scout were no longer available as free OpenRouter models. As of July 2026, all DeepSeek models on OpenRouter were paid, with input prices from about $0.09 per million tokens for DeepSeek V4 Flash to more than $0.70 per million tokens for the original R1.

Other free exits show the same pattern. On August 16, 2026, Groq moved Llama 3.3 70B and Llama 3.1 8B out of its no-cost offering and into enterprise-only access. If you need a paid fallback, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens off-peak, with peak-hour pricing doubling those rates.

Use this checklist next to the code:

  • Run a free-tier smoke test and see whether the output is good enough.
  • Change the model ID or endpoint in the same place without touching the rest of the app.
  • Name the paid trigger that makes you stop relying on the free tier.

When the trigger fires, you swap the key, the model ID, or the provider, and the weekend app keeps running.
