Weekend AI Project Checklist: All-In or Side Project
A checklist helps a salaried builder decide when a weekend AI project should become a business and when it should stay a side project.

You have a weekend AI project, some signups, and a decision: keep it on weekends or go all-in. The number can be a modest MRR portfolio rather than a breakout. A cheap build, an organic proof point, a lifetime-deal spike, and a written target tell you when the project can carry a full-time bet. The checklist keeps the decision low-cost: you can stop at any step.
Most side projects stay side projects, and that is fine. The useful question is whether your project has earned the next step.
The checks make the decision
- Ship the narrow version before your next payday.
- Get one organic proof point and an exact-match name.
- Run a lifetime-deal spike without breaking your day job.
- Write a founder-defined number, even if it is a modest MRR portfolio.
A short build keeps the risk weekend-sized
A salaried builder has a hard time budget. Weekend projects can absorb a few bad evenings; companies cannot absorb a build that keeps expanding. A narrow version that needs a team, a grant, or a long runway is still a project. Anatoly Pashias completed the first Motionvid.ai version after a 21-day build in late 2024. That is the kind of scope a salaried builder can defend. A short build also makes it easier to say no to new features.
The first version does not need to be small in ambition. It needs to be small in surface area. Pick the core job the product does, cut the settings, cut the integrations, and ship the thing that lets a stranger use it without a tutorial. Can a stranger complete the core task without asking you for help? If yes, the build is narrow enough. If no, it is still a demo.
A lifetime-deal spike turns attention into paid beta
Signups are not revenue. The deal does not need to be your main revenue model. Lifetime-deal spikes give people a reason to pay early, give you a reason to learn fast, and fund the next round of fixes. Motionvid had 50,000 signups before its AppSumo lifetime-deal launch. The launch generated $5,000 in one day, $20,000 in three days, and $40,000 in four days. The AppSumo campaign generated $120,000 in revenue.
After the campaign, Motionvid had more than 100,000 signups and was growing 40% month-over-month. The sequence matters more than the headline number. The spike gives a larger user pool, a faster feedback loop, and cash that makes the next decisions less desperate. Watch what users do after the deal ends: Do they keep using the product? Do they ask for features? Do their complaints point to the next fix?
The all-in number can be a modest portfolio
The all-in decision needs a written target. An MRR-before-quitting number separates a hobby from a business, and it can be one product or a portfolio. The number should be high enough to matter and low enough to reach, giving you a reason to keep the day job, leave it, or change it. Sally POS, a point-of-sale system for restaurants and bars, operates in more than 400 locations in South Africa, Cyprus, and Australia and earns 5-figure monthly recurring revenue. Framekit.ai, an AI website builder for creatives, supports more than 200 live sites and earns $1,000 in monthly recurring revenue.
Those examples are working businesses with a number attached. For a weekend project that is one of several products, ask whether the combined number covers the life you want to fund. For a single product, ask whether that product can support the decision without another product covering the shortfall. A modest number can be enough if it is stable and yours to control. A larger number can mislead if it depends on a single channel, a single customer, or a single launch that cannot be repeated.
Run the checks in order. Shrink the build if it is too big. Stop polishing and get the proof point if it is missing. Leave the project on the weekend if a lifetime-deal spike is not possible. Without a written number, the all-in decision is not ready. Put the number on paper before the next weekend build.
