Budget a Weekend AI Build: Research, Plan, Reserve Tokens

Research the target, draft a build plan, and set aside tokens for the bug-fix loop before you start coding.

A weekend AI build often looks like a quick win. The token bill usually arrives after the first pass, when the app is close enough to test and far enough from done to need many fixes.

The token bill hides in the fix loop

The Photon Studio project consumed about $2,000 in AI tokens. That number earns attention because it shows where the money went: the build, the fixes, and the repeated prompts that turn a rough app into something you can hand to another person.

The builder used OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, and sometimes Anthropic's Claude Fable, to create the app. The initial build was functional but buggy and unstable. That stage decides whether a weekend project stays a demo or becomes a product. Photon Studio's launch numbers included 170 active users on day one and 458 total downloads in a follow-up post after launch. A launch post is not a maintenance plan. Early adoption can make the fix loop feel urgent, but urgency is not a budget. A broad platform list makes a great launch story, but it is also a scope problem when the plan did not allow for it.

A weekend build needs a research-plan-loop budget

  • Research the target. Inventory the target's feature set before code starts. Done looks like a list of capabilities, not a list of wishes. For an image editor, that list should include file formats, layer behavior, export options, and the commands users expect. The builder first used a Deep Research workflow to inventory Photoshop capabilities, then passed that inventory to OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra in Extra High mode. That sequence matters: the model gets a clear inventory, not a vague prompt.
  • Draft the build plan. Turn the research into a short spec. You are done when the spec names the screens, the core actions, the file format support, and the key thing that must work end to end. Photon Studio is available on macOS, Windows 11, and Linux, and it can open and save PSD files while preserving layers. A strong scope statement may be large. For a weekend, choose the part that proves the idea. A common mistake is letting the model add features because the prompt was broad. A feature not named in the plan should not be discovered by the build.
  • Ship a usable first pass. Keep that pass small enough to test. The step is done when you can open, use, and break the app on purpose. A usable editor with a few tools beats a big empty app with many unfinished tools. A first pass too broken to test needs a smaller feature set before more spending.
  • Reserve the fix budget. Set aside a separate token budget for fixes. You have set the budget when you have a number you will not spend on new features. If that pass uses a large share of the budget, the rest belongs to the loop: run the app, find the failure, send the error back, and check the result. Tenzen judged the build not financially sensible because the Adobe subscription savings would not cover the token costs. That warning is useful, not a reason to stop.

A visible bill is a calmer bill

Start by writing separate numbers: research, first pass, and fix loop. Run the fix loop to zero, then stop adding scope. Research that changes the plan can earn another research spend. Work too broken to test needs a pause and a smaller feature set. A visible cost makes the decision easier: keep the loop, shrink the scope, or stop.

A side project can stay a side project, and that is fine. Before you close the laptop, write the known bugs down.
