Turn a Free Token Expiry Into a Weekend Build Plan

Treat free model credits as a deadline: check the expiry, the card requirement, and the Free Quota Only switch before you scope the build.

A free model quota can become a bill if the account moves into paid usage. The safer move is to treat it as a deadline: a limited period for proving a weekend idea without paying by accident.

You have a few evenings, not a full-time job. Start with the provider page, not the code. You need the expiry date, the payment requirement, and the Free Quota Only switch before you choose a feature.

The expiry date is the real deadline

A weekend build is small enough to finish, but API costs can continue after the weekend. The date matters more than the model name, and a visible expiry date gives the build a real stop point.

If you are testing Qwen3.8-Flash, note the 262,144-token default context and the 1,000,000-token expanded window.

Alibaba prices Qwen3.8-Flash API input at 1 yuan ($0.1488) per million tokens and output at 3 yuan per million tokens.

Price is only part of the decision. The real question is whether your test stays inside the free limit, and whether the account can be locked to free usage.

The free tier needs a paid-usage stop

Some free tiers are genuinely free, while others ask for a card before you use them. Scaleway lists one million free tokens, but it asks for a payment card.

That card requirement changes the risk. If the provider can bill after the quota ends, the weekend project becomes a small liability. Put the warning in the billing settings.

Look for a usage cap or a hard stop in the billing settings. The account should be able to make the test calls, but it should not start a paid invoice without a deliberate change.

Token math belongs before the weekend

Before you build, estimate the calls your demo will make. A small app can use more tokens than a long essay because it sends the conversation history again and again. Write down the input size, the output size, and the number of test runs.

When the estimate is close to the free limit, cut the feature list. A shorter prompt, a smaller file, or a cached answer can keep the demo inside the limit. When the estimate is far below the limit, you can afford one extra test.

Math does not need to be perfect. It only needs to be good enough to tell you when to stop. Many side projects stay side projects, and that is fine.

Write the stop rule before the code. If the model fails the long-context test, if the paid-usage stop is missing, or if the token estimate is too close to the limit, stop and choose a smaller demo.

Keep the rest of the stack near zero. A static page, a serverless function, and a model API can be enough for a proof. You do not need a database, a team, or a paid domain before the weekend is over.

The proof should be weekend-sized

  • Write the expiry date in a note you will see on the weekend.
  • Write the activation date next to it, with the model you are testing.
  • Check the payment strings before you paste the API key. Done means the answer is clear: no card, card with a free-only mode, or card with automatic billing.
  • Turn on the Free Quota Only switch if the provider offers one. The step is complete when the setting blocks paid usage, not just a promise in the marketing copy.
  • Run one long-context test with a file your app would actually use. Finished looks like a successful response, a clean error, or a measured token count you can trust.
  • Build one prototype you can show a friend.
  • Run one benchmark that tells you what the next paid step would cost.
  • Stop before production.

Keep the prototype narrow. A chat box, a document summarizer, a support triage page, or a prompt evaluator can all work. The test is whether the model fits the task before you spend real money.

When the weekend proof works, the next decision is whether to pay for a small production budget.
